A ram BOP utilizes horizontally opposed hydraulic cylinders to move two horizontally opposed removable metal blocks, with replaceable elastomer seals, to seal off pressure below the rams, with or without tubulars in the bore depending on the ram type. The exception is the casing shear rams which do not have any seals.
