Sodium carboxymethylcellulose. A nonfermenting cellulose product used in drilling fluids to combat contamination from anhydrite (gyp) and lower the water loss from the drilling fluid to the formation. Water with more than 20,000 ppm of salt (sodium chloride), reduces its effectiveness as a treating agent.
