Slug the pipe

Before hoisting the drill stem from the hole, it is desirable to pump in to the top of the drill stem a quantity of very heavy mud which will cause the level of the fluid in the drill stem to fall as the drill stem is hoisted. Thus, when a stand of the drill stem has been unscrewed, the fluid will have been evacuated from it. This prevents the crew members and tools from becoming covered with drilling fluid.
