Shallow hazards

Shallow hazards are adverse drilling subsurface conditions that may be encountered prior to the setting of the first pressure containment string and the emplacement of the BOP upon the well. Prior to this there is no way to shut the well in. “Shallow” is commonly understood by the industry to be the interval above the setting depth of the first pressure containment string.
