The pipe tongs suspended in the derrick or mast and operated by a wireline connected to the breakout cathead. In coming out of the hole, they are used on the pin end of the joint for breaking out. In going into the hole, they are used on the box end as backup to the makeup tongs. Also called breakout tongs.
